CMA114

The CMA114 project is a rehabilitation of an approximately 65m2 apartment, located in the Santos area of Lisbon, developed with the goal of increasing the property’s value for future sale. The aim was to create a special, unique project with its own identity, sensitive to the pre- existing structure, but also appealing and accessible to a broad audience.
The building follows Pombaline construction principles, with thick and strong boundary walls that support the wooden three-dimensional framework incorporated into the interior walls. To preserve the existing structure and minimize any structural intervention, the original apartment layout was maintained; only a few strategic openings were made to optimize the new layout.

The former interior bedroom lacked functionality, so two openings were created to connect it to adjacent spaces, transforming it into a new kitchen. These two openings are defined by polished stainless steel frames that highlight the moment of the intervention. These sleek, reflective surfaces enhance the natural light and contrast with the design of the remaining interior doors, which feature delicate carpentry details. The kitchen stands out with its understated and robust natural stone countertop, while the glass table—light and transparent— was specifically designed to fit into one of these arches, using the corridor space as a functional extension of the compact kitchen area.
The living room and one of the bedrooms were positioned along the building’s main façade, benefiting from generous lighting and a visual connection to the outdoors. The connection between these two rooms also offers flexibility, allowing them both to serve as social areas.
The second bedroom is located at the rear, which doesn’t share the same qualities as the front-facing spaces but has the advantage of direct access to one of the bathrooms. One of the windows opens to an inner courtyard, offering a less appealing external view. Therefore, a faceted translucent acrylic piece was designed and placed over a built-in desk within the thickness of the wall. This piece features integrated lighting that can switch between a cooler light, simulating natural daylight, and a warmer light for a more intimate atmosphere.
For the new carpentry elements that define the spaces, such as the corridor and kitchen panels and bedroom closets, a soft beige tone was chosen, contributing to the continuity and harmony of the apartment’s atmosphere. In the bathrooms, the combination of natural marble with baby blue paint, along with a full-length mirror, creates a sense of expansion and lightness in the space.
